flying home

In the dc airport and heading back to my island.

It was a good week, busy but good, If things work out the non profit I assist could end up helping tens of thousands and over time so many more Americans get help and addiction treatment services in the country. This has been a long standing project to share resources and technology across the country.

You would be surprised how hard it is to get and arrange sharing of resources.

The simple fact is each state and county work very similar processes and needs. It's possible to reuse and create software and programs that are both open source and reusable. One of systems I help create 8 years ago now, is being shared and reused by 22 states and counties saving millions of dollars and increasing service to countless thousands of people who are trapped in addiction problems.

We have shown time and time again this works, yet it's still pulling teeth to get states and counties to share in this process... People and government in this country believe they have to BUY the solution rather than share costs, share development and information...

To buy ... is to consume... and it doesn't offer a lasting solution. To share, to work together is kindness: That connection builds out solutions to transcend oneself and connect to many in a wholesome way.

The non profit I assist could be out of business in 4 months becuase ... the health system is out of balanced... It has lost touch to kindness and instead focuses on profit...

Health is about wholeness, profit always happens at the expense of another, a for profit based health system will by default be always not be a system that promotes full wholeness and will be out of balanced...

The non profit I assist is still here... working in connection and kindness, barely, but still here. We will see what happens but no matter what we are:

happily still sharing until the last penny rolls away to make a difference.

In sharing we do make a difference. I know becuase patiently and quietly : I do and have made a difference.

It's a day at a time.

Tonight I will back at our small temple, home and be in peace to the sound of frogs and rain tumbling down.

A day at a time in kindness and in life. I literally have no idea how I will make it next month, and I don't need to know. A day at time, and over eight years through a most crazy path... I am still here, happy, making it... beyond the odds still making the difference and living happily.

The truth is: Taoism teaches how to work in potential, the odds are never against you if you follow a Taoist lifestyle. We flow and fully embrace the full potential of life itself.

A day at a time is always just enough!

Peace in yours

No Internet

I am on modem speeds right now at 34K and the web has become a snail pace...

Long ago 300 baud was awesome and 1200 baud was light speed. I used to bounce about paper tape feeds and ... now I am grandpa telling the story of walking the mile in the snow blizzard to get to school (which yes I used to do), However, I can't match family stories of sleeping next to the cows for heat in the barn on the colder days...

of course if the economy keeps going south... this may come back into fad also...

Time to ruminate being young when being all too busy to be old...

The internet age is too slow for me :) so I will let it catch up later when I am back home on island time.

Till Saturday

Politics and DC

I am on the road to DC this week. I am working on helping a non profit expand and survive these harder times.

It took two days to get to DC by plane and lay overs. Long ago I used to commute to DC twice a month by plane from Olympia That was 8 hours per trip. Traveling 2 days and sleeping on the plane is a bit much. Not something I want to do very often.

Its been a year since I was last out here. It will be interesting to see where everything is at. So far I am noticing lots of emptier parking lots. Also the TSA has gotten more organized (not in a good way). The changes I see in the TSA are ominous, since under the new president I would hope to see a removing of fear and "terrorist" alerts... If the TSA is an indication of where things are going then this isn't good since it shows a trend that is still a negative and brokering in human fear.

Also some of the stories of fellow travelers have been likewise not good. I am seeing more harassment towards ordinary people. Not enough people are complaining loudly, but enough to bother me.

Talked to lots and lots of people on the road.. generally people are more open. I am finding more people are actually interested in what I do as a Taoist... instead of just getting the strange look of "OK..." and then turning away. Instead people are more engage and curious about what it is I do.

Its going to be a hectic week.. politics always is.

a day at a time.

I will be back on track for answering questions in my posts after the weekend.

Prison, Potential and Release

Strangely today two different friends sent me almost the same statement

The first was this statement:

My life feels so much like prison that many days it doesn't feel that I will survive.

A hour later another friend sent me a request for help breaking out from their situation:
I feel like I need to hand in my resignation to my current job. Seeing that this sounds and seems crazy because I do not have anything lined up…that my spirit is being contained…

I will answer my friends more personally, but I would like to write about this to help people learn what it means to live in potential: by exploring what it means first to live by limitation.

What is a prison?

  • A prison is a place of limitation.

People and society create prisons to limit the potential of people placed in the prison.

Flip this statement around

  • To limit oneself is to imprison oneself!

In this sense, whenever, we limit ourselves, it will feel like prison. We imprison ourselves in order to meet expectations and obligations. How often do you tell yourself: Oh today I can't do this because of… Or I have to work this job because I need to pay for my children's needs.

It might all be for extremely valid reasons! But it still hurts the spirit to box it within limitation.

What further re-enforces this problem, our society has "limited" methods of exchange down to a very few systems, primarily money, to provide connection... (the results and whys are for a separate post) which further dampens the ability of people to release spiritual potential.

Limitation is a very human quality: animal's don't limit themselves, neither do children at first.

This is why Taoism teaches how to live life in potential not within limitation of form.

Another issue to consider is, we are alive and human. That means we all have edges and issues to work against. Every life has an edge to work against. But our edges can easily be defined as limitations. Once you make your own personal issues and problems into a limitation you imprison yourself and then hinder personal growth and healing.

  • You see this true story told over and over again, how a person is defined by a disability, which at first limits them and then later they discover: the limitation is a lie and then they exceed and go beyond everyone's dream of potential.

So in the end the truth is this:

  • Don't limit yourself.
Easier said than done, otherwise we wouldn't have countless self help books and religions that exist to remind us of our great potential!

The simple answer is this:

  • Have faith and trust to your heart

While I lead a very free life, I still "work" at jobs, to earn money to support children. Those jobs and how I earn money at many times seemingly have limited me. I know at times I also have felt like being trapped in prison.

And then I smile, and release the walls, I go out and in kindness help my co-workers, I take time to exercise, to breath , to write poetry to release back into my potential.

For myself its a give and take process. I dive in to work and achieved what is required and then I shift back to heart and climb back out.

Ideally we would all work at the jobs which embolden our hearts, but the realities are, that isn't always an option. And as I will show later, at times harder paths leads to greater potential.

It's always possible to find a path around limitation. It isn't always easy; it isn't always a short path.

The first important distinction is this.

When limitation is imposed rather than accepted, it will feel like a prison.

So the first tactic is acceptance. This becomes a dance: a personal dance between your heart and the reasons of limitation. This permits a person to discover the walls are merely tools. Edges for you to climb and then literally to be used to jump to different places. Ironically at times limitation can help lead to better end results as they allow a person to see and discover life with a different perspective. You shouldn't always view limitation as being bad. They can represent activated potentials to leverage and then create something better.

The second aspect to consider.

Often time's limitations are externally placed by others to control you. This means it's important for you to act on your own, not to expect others to free you.

For example in a blog post today from Bill Cara's Site.

Bill was asking why the government wasn't thinking outside the box to fix the current financial problems the United States is facing. The reasons are very simple, the government is using the box to control everything. You won't see the powers controlling government thinking outside the box because they made the box to hold us in the first place.

To think outside of the box is to think outside of falsely defined limits placed on us. As a result don't expect someone from the outside to release you. Take the time to discover your own personal path out of any box you have found yourself trapped inside of. This is why the first quote of my book reads:

Science is fact

Religion is faith

Magic is perception

Know these boundaries to discover what lies beyond.

We each use a mixture of fact, faith and perception to find our way around limitations placed in our life.

Now this is just a start of a process to find freedom. The true secret is: this is a path of heart. Heart represent connection to the larger world, and in connecting to the larger world it becomes possible to remove the limitations we have had.

Another method

If you feel life has been limited, then begin something new. Always experiment and try practices like Yoga, Qi Gong, Martial arts etc to enliven the spirit. It may sound too simple, but many times something simple like this is enough to open up new possibilities to explore from.

One last thing

Limitation is the removal of potential: to take away what it possible.

Don't forget to smile , to laugh. To smile is always to open up possibility and potential. I have said it before in this blog and will say it again, the smile is one of the most important practices any person can learn and embrace in their life.

Look at any comedian and you will find a person who uses humor to turn their life around.

Explaining Taoism

A few days ago I answered this question for a student.

Can Taoism be defended? When I try to explain what Taoism is to others they tend to get this "huh," look on their faces.

To defend something suggests that others are passing judgment on something.

Should you let others judge your life and then define how you live your life in Taoism?

Taoism can be defended: but only when accepting yourself fully. Otherwise the judgment of others then introduces doubt and question into how you hold yourself. This causes a person to get stuck and not answer truly of their heart. (Taoism teaches not to judge others or answers but to accept others as is! This is part of holding onto to truth lightly!)

Having said that

Taoism has been around for thousands upon thousands of years. It has survived the larger judgment of humanity as a way of thinking and way of life. I teach and show it from one perspective. How I teach won't be right for everyone. That's why many schools of Taoism exist. This is also why humanity creates so many tales, philosophies and versions of religion to keep each other entertained :)

Don't worry about what others say or re-act. It's more important to determine what it means to you and then come to terms of acceptance of that first.

Part of the problem is the use of fear and expectation to drive western culture is opposite of core values in Taoism. This makes it harder to describe Taoism in a way that doesn't draw "huh" looks.

The good thing is when you get one of those huh looks, is to then switch your perspective. Ask the person what their faith is in life, and then find the common way to then explain Taoism from that angle.

Explaining it to others will help you explore your own personal practice in a fuller manner.

This answer is ironic since I had to use this very same answer for different question I also helped answer yesterday. The common theme is this:

Don't get trapped in your own perspective, open up the viewpoint to better answer questions when you or others get stuck.

Nature of Truth

The second Taoist lesson I teach is often summarized as this:

Embrace truth lightly to have the clearest view of the world.

My friend Angela and I were chatting about this

Angela

"Embrace truth lightly" is the most profound set of words I've read in a long time. Thanks

Taoism gives us room to grow and be who we are and yet also governs a harmonious and loving way of being - is it ironic, or just the way truth is?? ;)

Casey

Thanks my friend, slowly we will share here and explore life...

the way of truth :) is to be oneself

Now here is one of the twists that makes truth seemingly difficult to grasp:

We make ourselves to be so colorful and complicated!
On some days is it any wonder that we then also fumble at our own truths also?

I am sharing this since several people who I am talking to right now would find some benefit to ponder that to embrace their own inner truth lightly is also to more fully embrace and accept themselves completely.

The quick answers

OK now for fun, not for a paper, here are the quick answers to the latest list of academic questions passed my way :).

Today's list of questions passed to me were in blue and answers in black.

  • May I ask how you became involved in Tao?

    By living

  • Or do you find that your beliefs actually mitigate the stresses of life?

Taoism teaches many practices of release. In release you can find relief from stress. But to live is to also experience suffering or stress. We use every edge in life to climb upon, to become fuller beings in Taoism.

  • What are the biggest themes portrayed in Taoism?

~laughter~ ... OK yes there are common topics due to our human nature. So look to your life and every theme there is in life - we work in our Taoist practice to explore and become full in our nature- .

The problem is what you ask for me to list here creates limitation, forces a person to divide topics, which then creates sects and differences of approach... and then in time spiral in to dis-agreement and such. Taoism is a unique "ism" since our core value, the Tao.. is universally agreed upon as being undefinable in human terms. As a result Taoists have a common base to work from no matter what perspective we each might be coming from (in other words: how we each decide to approach practices to embrace the Tao)

Taoism works to potential not limitation. Asking to list themes by default creates limitation at the start for what a person will expect in a Taoist practice.

At times yes I do create lists for purposes of illustration, but we are careful about how we teach it, to keep it open to human nature.

So it spins back to me ~laughing~ a little as the best answer.

  • Are writings like Tao Te Ching widely read in the Far East?

    Yep

  • Who do you think Lao-tzu meant his main audience to be?

    It doesn't matter.

  • In Lao-tzu's legendary journey to the west, he wrote his book in two sections of 5,000 characters….which translation do you find to be most accurate?

None, find the one that speaks to your heart and be happy with that.

  • Do you think Taoism is interpreted differently in America than in Asia? If so, what are the differences and similarities?

Yes, very much so! But in the end the Tao is undefined! So who can practice Taoism "the Undefined Way" and claim to have it right? Seriously think about that for a moment.

  • Is there a historical person… Lao-tzu?

It doesn't matter, the work is there, enjoy it , as it is...

  • When read centuries ago, do you think that Taoism had a different affect than now?

It doesn't matter, the work is there, enjoy it , as it is...

  • Is it possible to follow Taoism in today's society with all the new technology and time devoted to work?

Yes now more so than ever it is an important practice to follow:
So people can release into their heart.

  • What made you decide to make your own translation of Tao Te Ching?

I never will publish a translation of the Tao Te Ching. It would be meaningless to do so. Any translation I do is for myself, don't use my words to define your own heart!

A Personal Tao isn't a translation, it's an examination of how to explore the Tao from a modern western perspective.

  • Do you think Taoism is more effective if taken completely literally or when looked at with a looser interpretation?

Doesn't make a difference, pick the style which helps you make more sense of the work. Then to go further, examine the materials using the style which is harder for you to use. This will let you push further in your understanding. Personally for me, I am a poet so I primarily view the materials as poetry. Since I have students who need more literal view points, that gives me the time to exercise on the other side of the fence.

  • Being a teacher of Taoism…do you have any stories that may offer inspiration to potential students?

    Yes: A Personal Tao

  • Do you know of any more groups or activities that an active Taoist can participate with and learn more from?

Just live. All groups and activities teach of the Tao. To live to heart is to discover Taoism.

If you are looking for a starting place:

Qi-Gong practice groups or Zen Meditation Circles
are both often a good places to start in the United States with more limited Taoist resources. If you can't find either of those, Yoga is a rich practice to explore, while not Taoist, it walks a similar enough path to help people discover more about their life. IN parts of Asia you can find Taoist temples easily enough. In other parts of the world where Taoist temples are few, then learn from the local religions with acceptance and you will discover more about the Tao. On the Internet many Taoist Discussion groups exist also. One Taoist Temple has even placed its temple to be online.

Honestly life is your temple as a Taoist: open up to your life and you will discover what is needed to continue the practice. Taoist materials are more deeply woven in western society than most people would guess or suspect.

  • Do you have anything to say about Taoism that you were hoping I would ask about and didn't?

    Nope, why should I?

Now my answers at times could seem flippant or avoiding the question. But in reality the answers are really not about the question! The answers are about: how to help start a person to think and to release into embracing Taoism.

For each person I will answer differently depending on their perspective in life. It's one of the reasons as a Taoist Guide as I am able to work with so many different people. Trying to answer these questions in a blog post as a one size fit all answer is just silly: as many of the answers here will be wrong for some people, while being right for others.

Answering the questions without knowing your heart would be as equally silly.

So reader beware. Know your own heart before taking in any answer to fill it with!

Namaste

The proper answer

I get quite a few emails of questions from students working on papers.

Before I publish the list of simple answers to the questions I got today, here is a fuller more complete answer to any list of academic questions.

To answer questions very directly, is like catching rain drops on the tongue.

  • While fun to catch and seemingly at first they do satisfy,

These answers quickly fade away leaving a person thirsty for more. This gets people to chasing rain drops. (it's more fun to dance in the rain). It's easier to sit down and take a drink later from the rain barrel. People think the rain barrel to be books and learnings from enlightened beings... That rain barrel is actually your life and it's filled only when living to your heart rather than chasing consumption or answers outside one's nature.

So the answers I would give to only get categorized would not have meaning, to instead get added up and up and up... to chasing "right" answers which don't exist. Any such answer wouldn't be right for "you" . Would this template set of questions... really provide answers which ful-fill to the heart... or would they drive an endless chase of knowledge? (keeping in mind to some, an endless chase of knowledge is what ful-fills their life)
Most questions asked are very rarely the question needed to find our answers...
Review this chapter from A Personal Tao about definitions.

Taoism is a process of release, into the undefined: the Tao

Any direct answer given in this case are given against creating a paper to receive a grade and then to be measured against... isn't the point of Taoism teachings at all.

So to all your questions I must answer that the answer is to release, find answers which make you smile, answers that explore potential and possibilities. It doesn't make a difference if they are correct, wrong or fit best: As all answers are always both wrong and right. This is one reason why answers form an endless search to truth. All answers also contain their seed for their own invalidity.

So what a Taoist looks for in a answer or What makes an answer powerful: is how it opens you to "release" to exploration of your personal life.

Hold to your heart what works

To each person, the answers that work: are those that create connection.

The heart is the center of how we connect out isn't it?

So my answer to all of these questions are:

A Smile, Potential, Release, Acceptance and then finally Heart

Then mix and match these 5 answers in such a way to compose a larger answer
  • That fit into the paper
  • That achieves results to enlighten those five answers in a way you can relate to.
  • While helping you jump the most silly hoops of being graded...

Now one last thought for students who are working to make the grade:

Does a letter grade of effort really "define" if you are on a "right" path for exploration of life?

The grade only reflects how well someone else thinks you are doing!

When spiritually should you ever use another person's grade to define your meaning of life?

Peace :) and wonder

Writing and Creation

Authors often get caught up in their in own writing . It's an easy trap to get caught in the details of the writing and forget the purpose.

When writing it must be considered how does the writing connect to the audience... This leads to a more important question of: Who is the audience?

This is important, so it can be written in a way to be understood by the target audience.

What is equally of importance is (2) how the tale, story , subject connects to your own path : how well does it help you to move forward with your own life ?

What most authors fail to realize is that 1 and 2 are often the same: most authors write for an audience of 1: themselves

This is where larger problems creep in since often times the author adds in hope of making money or changing another persons life or... a dozen other things... which end up getting ignored when the author forgets the audience viewpoint, needs or expectations.

This often sets writers up for a negative feedback loop of self worth: when other's don't value the effort as much as they do.

Of course this can be applied to many things not just writing.

Remember all actions and writings must balance out personal needs to the needs of others. This is a fine balancing act. But if you remember both sides, often times it makes the final result much better.

I see some authors and bloggers fall into this trap, reaching out to be helpful but due to poor response, internalizing it as a negative statement on their own worth.

Remember
  • To balance out the needs of your audience so you can take care of your own needs in the effort.

  • Not to place extra expectations on your effort. If you act from your heart then keep the expectations to be based for your heart and not tied to the whims of another heart. If you create for another person's heart then do so for that person's heart and expectations!

This last statement is deeper than might be guessed, as soon as we mention heart, it becomes personal and hard too untangle from the need to connect out in a larger manner. This is becuase heart is about connection.
For this reason I never review other people's poetry or work. It isn't for me to be critical of their heart but rather to just accept their heart as they present it.

Rambling on this morning I am...

Here is an interesting article about young internet surfers around the world.

Before getting lost in how much something will change us or shift societies: also remember the internet is one of many tools we work with to balance our essence of staying human and conscious.

In the end we are human with imagination and with a need to connect outward in story and action. The internet acts as a lens to focus connection yes. But it is still us, driving the actions.

It's not worth worrying or guessing about where it will all go...

(Credit to Pyxelated from Deviantart for the pic)

It is for us to live.

While useful, the internet also provides as much useless information that keeps people wading through perceived realities rather than living in action. What started off as an interesting article just made me think: It's time to get my tea and enjoy the sunrise. Peace out my friends.

It's all about exploring and continue to connect to "potential". At some point one has to act in potential to get anywhere... That's the point people forget about living virtually... They may generate potential which is great... but typically with only a little follow up action to take advantage of that potential...

People might act virtually:
but you also need to act in real life to fully use potential

Taoism as a practice teaches all about potential and how to surf that potential... And with every key... you have to remember to use it in the lock to open doors... (not only to open virtual doors)

Don't forget the action to balance out the potential.

Monday Rush Hour

It's Monday and I was sorting through various items of work I had to do. The first thing I do each morning at 6 am is figure out how to answer responses from emails from clients and seekers, and then I get ready for counseling phone calls and other aid I might be in the middle of working on.

But it was interesting as this morning I also went to the store at 7 to get some Teflon tape to repair a leaking faucet. I hit the morning rush hour. 17 years ago I was in a rush hour life style in Seattle Washington. That was the time of my life, when I got paid to literally build paper airplanes. I don't miss the grind of rush hour... It definitely wears a person's soul down just like an old sneaker as we rush about to ... we rush about to wear ourselves down in the grind in the end.

I realized my rush hour is happily spent literally answering several questions this morning upon the nature of the soul.

I have transformed my morning commute, to be one not measured in miles, but rather one traveled in spirit.

We all move in spirit, Our soul is what we are, our nature completely explored by living. The spirit the movement of our life, the movement of our soul.

I know alot of the people I work with also read my blog. I send you all my love this morning.

Together we do reach out and a make a difference, and the difference is living to our lives and helping each other do so fully.

Spirtual Paths

I mix a little bit of everything in my background. I have been an engineer once (not my favorite job) and my physicist and math background rooted into me: an acceptance of Western Approach in Science.

I have been a Taoist my entire life, exploring life as life. Life doesn't need to be fully defined to have a full appreciation of what it is. This has given me an Eastern base to work towards exploring life within.

Now this is where merging the various aspects of my education comes in handy. One thing I have done was to mix and match all the aspects of each: to simplify the whole mix.

For instance Spiritual Seekers get lost in definition, trying to nail down something which often seemingly is undefinable. Trying to nail down something which can cross boundaries to justify or absolutely paint answers from...

So how do I resolve this?

Provide a simple starting definition.

A seed, not to "define" the larger process, to help frame a starting point of acceptance of how to explore life.

So for instance:

Spirit represents the movement of life.

That simple statement all of the sudden serves as a starting point anyone can use to make a spiritual path accessible.

For some their path will be filled with facts, figures and building upon a kaleidoscope of discoveries to base their life upon.

For others it will be a process of release, letting go of everything in order to embrace the entirity of the universe.

For others still, it will be a back and forth process to play within...

Yet for all: movement of their life , of how to embrace the search... to be whole...

This is the spiritual journey. To open up such a path it can be as simple as accepting

the movement of your life
Now from here you can build upon that in any fashion you find best.

A Taoist follows their smile as a guide, leads with the heart, frames interaction in terms of kindness

And that is all extra, since each tradition will teach different words, different tools all for the same journey

of living

People are often afraid to become spiritual, to explore spiritual aspects of their life. However, in reality it is as simple as moving in your life, to discover the meaning of spirit.

Heart Mind

I had this great question sent to me a few days ago:

And then is my heart the same as my Intuition??

The Heart Mind is part of what we call Intuition.

In reality we are of three minds...

The grey matter in our head, the heart mind and the mind of our gut.

All three play together to create intuition!
It's just that in Western culture we let the Grey matter take control, to bully the other two minds into submission. This then leads to unbalanced actions.

Intuition is in reality
A healthy balance of our entire being
that releases into acceptance of action...

About Meditation: Part 3

To finish up the Meditation chat a bit

In distraction, at first I have lost my chain of thought... Being human I have wandered, been pulled to new thoughts, posted other topics...

And that is one of the points of Meditation... release...

To release out of our normal pre-programmed behaviors or habits.
Our mind is designed to constantly be on the go, to leap from idea to idea. At times we need to go beyond our normal nature: "to release" both into our nature and out of our nature both.

So for example awareness can be used to stitch together larger seemingly different aspects of our life together... or hold onto something and really work on it (such as a single thought).

I won't dally long on this post,

Meditation is a tool we have access to , a tool which lets us use awareness to focus and release into the larger essence of the world (among other things) . Honestly most seekers, don't know what they are seeking... so don't worry why you Meditate, let the awareness lead you to where the tools should be used for your life. This is why most Meditation practices don't really teach you the whys, but rather just how to meditate. Some practices might give a good up front story, but the story is part of the practice to set up a person towards release and awareness itself.

In the journey of Meditation, you will open doors and find a path within the awareness you awaken in the practice itself.

Have fun exploring.

Namaste.

Walking Between the Rain

The rain tumbles down ...

I was practicing walking between the rain today. So much space exists between each falling drop, each a world onto itself

This isn't a matter of being thin, it's ... awareness of our shape and flow of life. How to...

to fit into the world or to move on by without interference
It was pretty kewl actually. Always play, each and everyday to try something different

To do so, is to discover our full nature and potential.

days fly by

I close my eyes for just a day and a whole month flies past...

February already!

At least it's still 1960 right? or did I miss a few years also...

DOH...

2009 and counting...

That will teach me to fall to sleep under a tree... Of course if you do that here in Hilo side I am not sure it would be fun to wake up after the skeeters are done with you...

On a more serious note I will write up part 3 / 4 of meditation this week.
